Northern Ireland pharmacies support new anxiety campaign

Community pharmacy teams across Northern Ireland are helping people recognise and manage feelings of anxiety through the latest Living Well campaign.

The Managing Anxiety campaign will run throughout August and September, offering practical advice, coping techniques and information about where people can access further support.

It forms part of the Living Well service, delivered in partnership by the Public Health Agency (PHA), Community Pharmacy Northern Ireland and the Department of Health.

Practical steps to support mental wellbeing

The campaign aims to help people understand anxiety and take positive steps to look after their mental health.

Alison McCusker, Health and Social Wellbeing Improvement Manager at the PHA, said: “We want to help people understand that there are practical steps we can all take to support our mental wellbeing.

“Small actions, such as staying connected with others, being physically active, practising calming techniques and making time for activities we enjoy, can all help us feel better equipped to cope.”

A series of short videos has also been developed as part of the campaign, guiding people through breathing techniques that may help them manage feelings of anxiety.

Support in a familiar setting

More than 500 community pharmacists across Northern Ireland are involved in the Living Well service, providing accessible advice and support within their local communities.

Community pharmacist Rebekah Rea said pharmacies can offer a familiar and welcoming environment for people who may be experiencing difficulties with their mental health.

“Community pharmacies are often one of the most accessible healthcare settings for people who may be struggling with their mental health,” she said.

“Many people speak to their pharmacist regularly and feel comfortable seeking advice in a familiar environment.

“Sometimes a conversation is all it takes to help someone realise they are not alone and that support is available.”

Throughout the campaign, pharmacy teams can provide a listening ear, share information on managing anxiety and direct people towards relevant services when additional support is required.

Resources, including information leaflets, will also be available from participating community pharmacies during August and September.
