Lifeline brings antibiotics story to the stage with powerful message on AMR

Two members of the Pharmacy In Focus team were invited to the opening night of Lifeline, a new musical exploring the discovery of penicillin and the growing global threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The production tells the story of Sir Alexander Fleming and his discovery of the world’s first true antibiotic, alongside a modern-day narrative that highlights the urgent and evolving challenge of drug-resistant infections.

Described as “a unique approach of using the arts to raise awareness of a critical public health challenge,” the musical takes audiences on a powerful and emotional journey while delivering an important message about the future of antibiotics, according to Carolyn.

Blending history with a contemporary storyline, Lifeline explores how the overuse and misuse of antibiotics could impact patient care, reinforcing just how central these medicines are to modern healthcare, from routine surgery to complex treatments.

Carolyn described the show as “an emotional rollercoaster” that effectively highlighted the scale and seriousness of AMR, adding that it “drove home the message that so much of modern medicine relies on antibiotics.”

At the same time, the production balances heavier themes with humour and relatable storytelling. Amy noted that it begins “fun and upbeat”, before “slowly hitting you with some more hard-hitting stuff around the impact of an antibiotic crisis.”

This contrast helps make a complex issue more accessible, with the show avoiding a lecture-style approach while still encouraging reflection. As Amy put it, it is “not a lecture, but it definitely makes you think about the overuse, over-reliance and misunderstandings around antibiotics.”

Overall, Amy described Lifeline as “engaging, eye-opening, and one we were still talking about after it finished,” highlighting its ability to bring a global health issue to life in a way that resonates with audiences.

With antimicrobial resistance continuing to pose a significant challenge worldwide, Lifeline offers a fresh and impactful way of raising awareness, using storytelling to highlight the importance of protecting antibiotics for future generations.
