Community pharmacies across Northern Ireland continue to face financial, operational, and workforce challenges. Despite these pressures, they remain a trusted and vital part of the health service, delivering accessible care and advice to thousands of patients every day.
To support independent pharmacies in navigating this changing environment, the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) has launched the Future Pharmacy Network, an initiative designed to equip pharmacies with the tools, guidance, and peer support they need to adapt and grow sustainably.
A Collaborative Approach
The Future Pharmacy Network has been created by the NPA with input from an expert steering group of innovative pharmacy owners from across the UK. Its mission is to empower every member pharmacy to build a resilient, future-ready business that can meet evolving patient needs.
The initiative focuses on three key areas:
• Maximising NHS service opportunities to ensure pharmacies can meet the next generation of healthcare needs.
• Developing private services with practical guidance and tools to grow income streams and respond to local demand.
• Encouraging independent prescribing so pharmacists can deliver enhanced clinical care and expand their clinical scope.
Access to the network is free for active NPA members, ensuring the benefits are widely available across Northern Ireland.
Adapting to Northern Ireland’s Unique Context
Northern Ireland’s community pharmacy network continues to demonstrate resilience in the face of funding uncertainty, supply chain disruption, and rising costs. At the same time, local pharmacists are increasingly involved in medicines optimisation, minor ailments, and public health services. The NPA Future Pharmacy Network has been designed to support these developments by aligning practical business support with the realities of pharmacy practice in Northern Ireland.
The initiative recognises that each UK nation has a distinct commissioning and regulatory environment. Resources within the Network are being tailored to reflect local structures, priorities, and funding frameworks, ensuring that guidance remains relevant for pharmacists working under Northern Ireland’s Health and Social Care Board arrangements.
Learning from Success
A key part of the NPA Future Pharmacy Network is the sharing of best practice through case studies and peer examples. Pharmacies across Northern Ireland can showcase how they have diversified services, implemented new technologies, or developed specialist clinical offerings to better serve their communities.
These real-world examples will help others to learn what works, avoid common pitfalls, and accelerate innovation across the independent pharmacy sector.
Building a Sustainable Future
The NPA Future Pharmacy Network is more than a resource hub. It brings together education, campaigning, and collaboration to support the long-term sustainability of community pharmacy.
NPA Chair Andrew Lane said the initiative reflects the Association’s commitment to helping its members adapt. “Community pharmacies in Northern Ireland continue to deliver vital front-line healthcare under challenging conditions. Through the Future Pharmacy Network, we aim to provide practical support, encourage innovation, and ensure independent pharmacies are fully equipped to meet future patient needs.”
