ConsultTed: A Digital Revolution in Pharmacy Care, Led by Award-Winning Pharmacist Stephen Toland
In a significant advancement for community healthcare, Northern Irish pharmacists Stephen Toland and Neil Sharpe have introduced ConsultTed, a groundbreaking digital platform poised to transform minor illness management within the NHS. This innovation arrives at a pivotal moment, as the healthcare system seeks efficient solutions to alleviate pressures on general practitioners and hospitals.
Empowering Pharmacies to Alleviate Healthcare Strain
ConsultTed is designed to enable community pharmacies to directly and safely manage minor ailments such as sore throats, coughs, and stomach bugs. By positioning pharmacies as the initial point of care, the platform aims to reduce unnecessary GP and hospital visits, potentially saving the NHS up to £1.7 billion annually. Additionally, it could contribute £350 million to the UK economy by decreasing workplace absences and providing pharmacies with up to £30,000 in additional annual income without increasing their workload.
Currently in beta testing, ConsultTed is operational in select pharmacies, with plans for a comprehensive rollout across the UK and Ireland by August. The platform has garnered attention through showcases in London, Dublin, and New York, highlighting its potential on an international scale.
Stephen Toland: Recognised Excellence in Pharmacy
Stephen Toland’s leadership in developing ConsultTed has been acknowledged through his receipt of the ‘Pharmacist of the Year’ award at the Pharmacy in Focus NI Awards in March. This accolade celebrates his innovative approach to community healthcare and his commitment to enhancing patient outcomes.
Beyond his work with ConsultTed, Toland has led 11 Building the Community-Pharmacy Partnership (BCPP) projects, focusing on supporting vulnerable groups, including individuals dealing with substance misuse and mental health challenges. His efforts have significantly improved health literacy and access to care within these communities.
A Vision for the Future of Healthcare
The launch of ConsultTed represents a forward-thinking approach to healthcare delivery, emphasizing the critical role of community pharmacies in managing minor health issues. By equipping pharmacists with digital tools like ConsultTed, the initiative seeks to streamline patient care, reduce the burden on traditional healthcare settings, and foster a more efficient and accessible healthcare system.
