The Ulster Chemists’ Golfing Association recently held its annual golf day at Belvoir Golf Club. While the event is always an exciting – and enjoyable – day’s golfing for the province’s pharmacists, this year was particularly special as the association was celebrating its centenary!
The first golf day, which was held 100 years ago at Greenisland Golf Club, was the idea of pharmacist W J Rankin, a member of Greenisland Golf Club, who invited colleague M H McRoberts to join him in a game of golf at the club.
During the course of the game, a discussion took place about the number of chemists, who played the sport, and so the two men decided to write to every chemist golfer in Ulster known to them to find out if it would be possible to arrange a competition.
As a result, the Ulster Chemists’ Golfing Association was formed with McRoberts as Honorary Treasurer and Rankin as Honorary Secretary. The rest, as they say, is history!
