News in Brief

NPA Go Green
The NPA has launched a new campaign to find out what pharmacists want from their IT systems, to refine their list of must-haves. Ten categories, including clinical governance, patient records and dispensing have been drafted and now members are invited to give their views on the Association’s web-based forum. It is intended that the ‘IT Green Paper’ will give a definitive list for system suppliers to improve their services with.

Cancer Drug Falls Short
The kidney cancer drugs bevacizumab (Avastin), sorafenib (Nexavar) and temsirolimus (Torisel) should not be used by the NHS as first-line drug treatments for people with advanced or metastatic renal cell carcinoma, according to NICE. As for second-line treatment for these conditions, neither sorafenib nor sunitinib (Sutent) are recommended.

Co-op Ditch NPA
The Co-operative Pharmacy chain has severed its ties with the National Pharmacy Association, stating that its services are of no value to the firm. “It didn’t meet what we needed as a business,” explained superintendent pharmacist Janice Perkins. “The NPA provides a very good service to its members, we don’t have an issue with the NPA.”

Itchy Topic
Alitretinoin (Toctino) has been recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence as a possible treatment for people with severe chronic hand eczema that has not responded to potent topical corticosteroids. According to the guidance, only dermatologists or doctors experienced in treating people with severe chronic hand eczema and using systemic retinoids should initiate and monitor treatment.

All About Health
AAH Pharmaceuticals has officially launched allabouthealth.org.uk, a new website designed to promote self-care and to empower patients to make decisions about their own health and lifestyles. The campaign is supported by The Patients Association and will enjoy nationwide, high-profile public advertising.

Pharmacists from across Northern Ireland have been celebrating their success in the Pharmacy in Focus Awards held recently at the Ramada Hotel in Belfast as part of the Ulster Chemists’ Association’s annual President’s Ball.

The glittering occasion, which is the highlight of the pharmacy industry calendar, was attended by over 550 guests. Ten specially commissioned trophies, known as ‘CHEMIs’ were awarded to the deserving winners while a stunning piece of crystal glass was presented to this year's recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Pharmacy Award, Sheelagh Hilan from Randalstown Pharmacies.

The luminaries if Northern Ireland pharmacy were also joined by some of the country's most influential politicians in health. Health Committee Chair, Jim Wells MLA, outlined the importance of the awards to pharmacists in Northern Ireland.

"I would like to sincerely thank the Ulster Chemists’ Association and president James McKay for welcoming my wife and me to their annual ball. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and was extremely impressed by the level of commitment and passion shown by pharmacists and their teams from across Northern Ireland, as showcased during the Pharmacy in Focus Awards.

I was particularly pleased to see Crossgar Pharmacy from my South Down constituency win the Commitment to Health and Social Wellbeing Award.  Such a huge turnout is testament to how important this annual occasion is for rewarding and recognising what is an invaluable profession for this country.”

James McKay, president of the Ulster Chemists’ Association, was overwhelmingly pleased with the high attendance and support from the pharmacy industry.

The Ulster Chemists’ Association President’s Ball this year reached record numbers in attendance and I extend my sincere thanks to all at the Association and Profile Event Management who made the night possible. The prestigious Pharmacy in Focus Awards is synonymous with recognising outstanding dedication and commitment to the pharmacy profession in Northern Ireland. Congratulations to all our very deserving and very hard-working winners and finalists and thank you to all who attended and helped to raise over £5500 for the Ulster Cancer Foundation and Africare.”

Jason Andrews, Director of Profile Event Management who organised the awards was delighted with the enthusiasm of the winners and the success of the event.

“The annual UCA president’s ball has always been something that pharmacists from across Northern Ireland look forward to but, with the addition of the awards, it really has become an event that no-one in the industry wants to miss out on. This year’s ceremony was bigger and better than ever and it was a real privilege for the team at Profile Event Management to organise it."

“The Pharmacy in Focus Awards provide an opportunity to recognise and reward those shining lights and entrepreneurs within community pharmacy. I would like to extend my personal congratulations to all the winners and to thank our main sponsors Sangers (NI) Ltd, AAH Pharmaceuticals and Phoenix Healthcare Distribution. All of our winners richly deserved the recognition they have been given and I am delighted by the positive feedback from all those who attended."
